The PC expansion cards differ in both their construction typ and functionality. We would like to introduce you to the different construction types and the expansions which we are offered below. 

Types of construction

In principle, the choice of construction typ depends on the specific requirements and the available space on the motherboard. It is important to ensure that the chosen type is compatible with the motherboard and meets the necessary performance requirements. 

PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect):
Advantages: PCI slots are very common and available on many motherboards. PCI cards are generelly inexpensive.
Disadvantages: The PCI interface has limited bandwidth compared to more modern standards such as PCIe, which makes it less suitable for performance-intensive applications.
PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express):
Advantages: PCIe offers a higher bandwidth compared to PCI, which makes it ideal for high-performance applications such as graphics cards. There are different PCIe generations (e.g., PCIe 3.0, PCIe 4.0) that support different transfer speeds.
Disadvantages: PCIe cards can be more expensive than their PCI equivalents, and older motherboards may not support the latest PCIe versions.

Mini PCIe:
Advantages: Small and compact, often used in laptops and box PCs. 
Disadvantages: Limited bandwidth compared to traditional PCIe slots.

M.2:
Advantages: Very compact design, high bandwidth. Often used for NVMe SSDs, WLAN and Bluetooth cards.
Disadvantages: Availability of M.2 slots can differ depending on the motherboard.

Connection / expansion

The expansion cards allow you to expand your industrial PC with different interfaces. 

Network card (LAN/WLAN):
These cards expand the options for connecting to a wired (LAN) or wireless (WLAN) network.

USB expansion card:
These cards provide additional USB ports if the existing ports on the motherboard are not sufficient.

SATA III expansion card:
Enables you to expand the number of SATA III interfaces on your industrial PC on the one hand, but it can also be used to connect internal drives or upgrade the SATA transfer speed.

Bluetooth expansion card:
Bluetooth expansion cards are used to enable wireless communication over short distances between different devices.

Serial expansion cards:
They provide the ability to add serial communication interfaces. Serial interfaces are often used to connect to devices such as serial printers, modems, barcode scanners or industrial controllers.

Graphics cards:
Expand the range of display outputs on your industrial PC. An integrated acceleration graphics engine with the corresponding DDR memory provides the necessary graphics performance.
